Born in January or December: which AEIS level does my child sit?

Blog · 29 Oct 2026

MOE's age checker groups children from 2 January to 1 January, not by calendar year. We tested the boundary dates, and a child born on 1 January lands in the older group.

Facts checked against the official pages on 18 Oct 2026.

MOE's age checker returns a test by date of birth. We ran it with 2027 as the year of admission, on dates either side of 1 January.

What the checker returned

Date of birth Test to apply for Cambridge score (A2 Key for Schools)
31 December 2017 Pri 4 Maths 130 and above
1 January 2018 Pri 4 Maths 130 and above
2 January 2018 Pri 3 Maths 120 and above
1 January 2019 Pri 3 Maths 120 and above
2 January 2019 Pri 2 Maths 100 and above
1 January 2020 Pri 2 Maths 100 and above

In these tests, a child born on 1 January 2018 was given the same test as a child born on 31 December 2017. A child born one day later, on 2 January 2018, was given the Primary 3 test. The same pattern appeared at the start of 2019: 1 January 2019 gave the Primary 3 test and 2 January 2019 gave the Primary 2 test.

In both pairs, the change came between 1 January and 2 January, not at the turn of the calendar year. In each pair, the child born on 1 January was given the older group's test.

The same boundary in MOE's Primary 1 release

MOE's Primary 1 registration release of 29 April 2026 uses the same dates. In its section on compulsory education, which concerns Singapore Citizens, it refers to children born between 2 January 2020 and 1 January 2021 (both dates inclusive) who are to take part in the 2026 P1 Registration Exercise for admission in January 2027, or enrol in the Junior 1/P1 Programme of a SPED school.

What to do

Enter the exact date of birth in MOE's checker before you book a Cambridge test. The Cambridge score depends on the level: a child born on 1 January 2018 needs 130 and above, and a child born on 2 January 2018 needs 120 and above. Keep a screenshot of the result for your records.

What we could not confirm

  • Whether the same boundary applies for admission in 2028. We ran the checker only for 2027.
  • Dates other than the ones we entered. We ran the checker on the dates in the table, and also on 1 June of each birth year from 2011 to 2019.
