What the AEIS actually tests, level by level

Blog · 17 Oct 2026

MOE says each AEIS test covers the level before the one a child applies for. Here is what MOE's age checker returns for each level, and the paper SEAB sets for it.

Parents often start with practice papers for the level their child is applying to join. MOE's test details page points one level lower. It says that a child applying for Primary 3 should be familiar with Primary 2 content, and that a child applying for Secondary 3 should be familiar with Secondary 2 content.

What MOE's age checker returns

MOE's AEIS eligibility page has a checker. We entered a date of birth and 2027 as the year of admission. These are the results for a child born on 1 June of each year.

Born Test to apply for Content tested
2019 Pri 2 Maths Pri 1 Maths
2018 Pri 3 Maths Pri 2 Maths
2017 Pri 4 Maths Pri 3 Maths
2016 Pri 5 Maths (AEIS) Pri 4 Maths
2012 Sec 1 tests, Sec 2 test or Sec 3 tests Pri 6, Sec 1 or Sec 2 English and Maths

The checker's answer depends on the exact date of birth, so use MOE's checker with your child's date.

The tests SEAB describes

SEAB's test details describe a Pri 2/3 Mathematics test and a Pri 4/5 Mathematics test. Calculators are not allowed.

Test Part 1 Part 2
Pri 2/3 Mathematics 29 multiple-choice items, 25 minutes 17 short-answer items, 40 minutes
Pri 4/5 Mathematics 30 multiple-choice items, 35 minutes 8 short-answer and 6 open-ended items, 50 minutes

Secondary applicants sit two tests. The English test takes 2 hours 10 minutes. Part 1 is a composition on one chosen topic. Part 2 is 50 compulsory multiple-choice questions on comprehension and language use. The Mathematics test has 34 multiple-choice items in Part 1 (30 minutes) and 20 short-answer items plus 10 to 15 open-ended items in Part 2 (1 hour 45 minutes).

What this means for practice material

For the Pri 4 Maths test, the checker lists Pri 3 Maths as the content tested. For the Pri 2 Maths test, it lists Pri 1 Maths. The Pri 2/3 test lasts 65 minutes in total, and the Pri 4/5 test lasts 85 minutes in total.

What we could not confirm

  • The checker's results for dates of birth other than the ones we entered.
  • The list of topics inside each level's content. MOE points to its primary school syllabus and its O-Level syllabus for that.
